How to Play Baccarat
Baccarat looks intimidating from outside the table and is one of the simplest casino games once you sit down. You are not playing a hand — you are betting on which of two hands, Player or Banker, will finish closer to nine. The dealer does everything else. There are no decisions to make after the bet is placed, which is exactly why the game moves so fast.
The three bets
Every round offers Player, Banker or Tie. Player and Banker pay even money, though winning Banker bets are usually charged a 5% commission. Tie pays much more but lands rarely, and its house edge is far worse than the other two — it is the bet to understand and then avoid.
How card values work
Aces count one, two through nine count face value, and tens plus all face cards count zero. Hands are scored modulo ten, so only the last digit matters: a seven and a six total thirteen, which scores three. This is why no hand can ever bust — the score simply wraps around.
When a third card is drawn
The third-card rule is fixed and automatic. If either hand totals eight or nine on the first two cards it is a natural and the round ends. Otherwise the Player hand draws on a total of zero to five and stands on six or seven, and the Banker's action depends on both its own total and the Player's third card. You never choose — the dealer follows the table.
Why Banker has the lowest edge
Because the Banker hand acts after seeing the Player's third card, it wins slightly more than half of the decided hands. The 5% commission exists to claw that advantage back, and even after commission the Banker bet keeps the lowest house edge of the three. Tie is the worst by a wide margin.
About scorecards and patterns
Live tables display roads and bead plates tracking previous results, and players read them for streaks. It is worth being clear about what these are: every shoe is independent of the last result, so no pattern on the board changes the odds of the next hand. Track them for enjoyment, not as a system.
